Firewatch are responsible for maintaining surveillance of areas on ships under repair where hot work is performed such as welding, grinding, and cutting, and ensuring that sparks and bits of molten metal that to fly into the surrounding area do not smolder. Maintain a lookout for small fires that result from sparks and bits of slag, and sounds the alarm in case of an emergency. Primary duty is to execute sounding the alarm, and if possible, attempts to control the fire. Maintain the conditions and requirements stated on the safety permit. Review the specific type of work and precautions described on the Hot Work Permit for the assigned work site. Monitor the welding/cutting work on both sides of walls/floors and be on the alert for signs of a fire. Keep flammable and combustible materials from ignition sources. Correct or stop conditions which may lead to a fire and report any incipient fires. In the event of fire, extinguish it immediately or turn a fire alarm on. Attempt to extinguish fires only when obviously within the capacity of the equipment available. Stop operations during any hazardous condition. Ensure all employees are aware of the exact location of firefighting equipment in the immediate area. Inspect the entire work area for potential release of flammable vapors or liquids. Prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts any time.
Guard the space against unauthorized entry. Perform other duties as assigned including the use of small hand tools and work area clean-up
Minimum of 6 months - 1 year of relevant shipyard labor experience.
Excellent communication and listening skills.
Ability to assess and evaluate situations effectively.
